Human Connection Scarcity Model

Build around authentic connection as AI makes human expression scarcer

The model applies supply-and-demand reasoning to the post-AI economy. As AI makes polished content, routine communication, and digital production abundant, unfiltered human expression and genuine interpersonal connection become comparatively scarce. Scarcity makes those qualities more valuable. A business can respond by shifting differentiation away from information alone and toward lived stories, founder visibility, trusted relationships, community interaction, and in-person experiences. The output is not an anti-AI business; AI can still increase efficiency. The strategic advantage comes from using that efficiency while deliberately preserving the human moments customers cannot obtain from an automated system. Products and services built around facilitating those moments may become more desirable as synthetic content proliferates.

Origin

Amy Sangster developed the hypothesis while preparing a presentation for entrepreneurs adapting to rapid AI-driven change. She connected the post-AI environment to the supply-and-demand effects she observed when human connection became scarce during the COVID era.

Core principles

  • 01Scarcity increases perceived value
  • 02AI-generated abundance makes authentic humanity more distinctive
  • 03Stories reveal the person behind a business
  • 04Communities facilitate connection that content alone cannot provide

How to run it

  1. 1

    Map AI abundance

List the parts of your market that AI can now produce quickly and cheaply, such as educational posts, emails, images, or basic advice.

Pro tip Pay attention to outputs customers increasingly describe as generic or interchangeable.

Watch out Do not assume an activity remains differentiated merely because it previously required expertise.

  2. 2

    Locate scarce human value

Identify the trust, empathy, lived experience, judgment, accountability, or interpersonal access that automation does not reproduce convincingly.

Pro tip Ask customers which interactions make them feel known, supported, or connected.

Watch out Artificially adding a personal signature to automated output is not the same as creating genuine connection.

  3. 3

    Expose lived experience

Replace some generic authoritative content with specific stories, challenges, decisions, and lessons drawn from the people behind the brand.

Pro tip Retain natural language and distinctive inflections rather than polishing every imperfection away.

Watch out Do not manufacture vulnerability or disclose details that should remain private.

  4. 4

    Create connection mechanisms

Build recurring opportunities for customers to interact with the founder and with peers pursuing a shared outcome.

Pro tip Use small groups, live discussions, peer introductions, or in-person events where appropriate.

Watch out A large passive audience is not automatically a connected community.

  5. 5

    Tie connection to the offer

Make human participation part of how the product delivers its promised transformation rather than treating community as decorative engagement.

Pro tip Measure retention, referrals, participation, and customer outcomes alongside audience size.

Watch out Connection without a clear customer outcome can become unfocused social activity.

In the wild

AI-assisted advisory membership

A business educator uses AI to draft lesson materials but differentiates the membership through live founder reviews, candid case stories, and small peer groups. The automated layer improves speed, while members pay for contextual judgment and relationships that generic tools cannot provide.

→ Members receive efficient education without losing access to trusted human guidance and belonging.

Local customer community

A product company creates small in-person workshops where customers learn from staff and one another. The event turns an otherwise replaceable product into a relationship-centered experience.

→ The company gains stronger loyalty and word-of-mouth differentiation.

Common mistakes

Rejecting AI entirely

The model does not require avoiding automation. It requires recognizing which human qualities become more valuable as automation expands.

Publishing unedited synthetic content

High-volume AI output without lived detail can make a brand feel interchangeable and weaken the connection the strategy is meant to build.

Confusing audience size with connection

Thousands of followers can still feel disconnected; the mechanism requires meaningful interaction and shared participation.

Is it for you?

Best for

It is best for founders, educators, creators, and service businesses whose customers value trust, belonging, or personal insight.

Not ideal for

It is less useful where buyers care almost exclusively about standardized cost, speed, or commodity output.

From the transcript

“My perspective of any change is, that supply and demand is always going to be in effect. So as something becomes more scarce. The opposite…”

“And I think that connection is the scarce resource nowadays. True human connection.”

Amy Sangster · 0:06:15

“And as a result, if we build product services businesses around facilitating real, true human connection, then that is something that's going to be in…”
