The Three Ps framework organizes personal development around push, perspective, and purpose. Push supplies the growth stimulus by moving you beyond familiar tasks and into challenges that develop skill, confidence, and resilience. Perspective supplies honest feedback: you examine strengths and weaknesses, remain open to learning, and treat ability as expandable rather than fixed. Purpose supplies direction by connecting goals to core values and a personally meaningful reason for pursuing them. The elements reinforce one another. Purpose helps you choose worthwhile challenges, push generates new experiences, and perspective turns those experiences into learning. Repeating this cycle transforms self-actualization from a distant aspiration into a continuing practice of deliberate action, reflection, and alignment.

Origin

Jasmine Star introduced the Three Ps near the end of this episode as an action-oriented framework for applying its lessons about growth and self-actualization.

Core principles

  • 01Growth requires deliberate discomfort.
  • 02Self-awareness makes improvement actionable.
  • 03Abilities can expand through learning and practice.
  • 04Values give goals direction and staying power.
  • 05Small actions compound into greater potential.

How to run it

  1. 1

    Push Beyond Familiar Limits

Select a challenge, experience, conversation, or skill that stretches your current capabilities. Enter it deliberately rather than waiting for discomfort to find you.

Pro tip Choose a stretch that is uncomfortable but still specific and manageable.

Watch out Do not confuse reckless risk or chronic overload with productive discomfort.

  2. 2

    Expand Your Perspective

Assess your strengths, weaknesses, assumptions, and recent results honestly. Adopt a learning posture and seek perspectives that reveal what you cannot see alone.

Pro tip Ask someone with a different background to challenge one of your assumptions.

Watch out Self-evaluation without humility can become rationalization rather than learning.

  3. 3

    Anchor in Purpose

Identify what genuinely inspires you and clarify the values your goals should express. Use that purpose to prioritize opportunities and sustain effort.

Pro tip Write one sentence connecting the next challenge to the person or leader you want to become.

Watch out A goal borrowed from someone else's expectations will rarely provide durable motivation.

  4. 4

    Take One Immediate Step

Choose a small action that expresses push, perspective, or purpose today. After completing it, capture what changed and use that learning to select the next action.

Pro tip Make the action small enough to complete before momentum fades.

Watch out Do not leave the framework at the level of reflection or inspiration.

In the wild

Jasmine Enters the Stanford Program

Jasmine applied to a three-month Latino Business Action Network program at Stanford knowing it would require travel, unfamiliar collaboration, and 10–12 hours of weekly work while she was parenting a two-year-old. She coordinated with her husband, accepted the discomfort, and completed the experience.

→ She discovered greater capacity in herself, received a strong education, and built a valuable network.

A Founder Applies the Three Ps

A founder avoids sales conversations despite needing customer insight. She chooses five interviews as her push, asks a mentor to challenge her assumptions for perspective, and reconnects the interviews to her purpose of creating a genuinely useful service. She records what she learns after every call.

→ The founder gains confidence, identifies clearer customer needs, and improves the offer without taking an indiscriminate risk.

Common mistakes

Waiting to Feel Comfortable

Growth stalls when you wait for a challenge to become easy before acting. Choose a bounded stretch and let experience build confidence.

Using Only Your Own Perspective

Self-awareness becomes distorted when it relies solely on internal judgment. Invite feedback and expose yourself to people with different experiences.

Pursuing Goals Without Values

A demanding goal without a meaningful reason can produce activity without fulfillment. Clarify why the goal matters before committing sustained effort.

Is it for you?

Best for

It is best for entrepreneurs and leaders who feel capable of more but lack a structured path for personal growth.

Not ideal for

It is not ideal for someone whose immediate physiological or safety needs require attention before ambitious growth work.
