When negative feedback arrives, first classify it by function rather than by how painful it feels. A critique identifies something specific that went wrong and offers, implies, or enables a way to improve it. Criticism merely condemns the person or work without supplying a useful path forward. If a critique reveals harm, poor execution, or a correctable mistake, own the issue and make it right even when the message hurts. If a comment is only destructive and the underlying business decision remains intentional, release it rather than surrendering attention to it. The filter preserves openness to learning while preventing every hostile opinion from becoming an operating instruction.

Origin

Jasmine Star described this filter when asked how she handles increased scrutiny as her public profile grows. Extracted from The Jasmine Star Show.

Core principles

  • 01Useful feedback identifies a problem and a path forward
  • 02Emotional pain does not make a critique invalid
  • 03Non-actionable attacks need not control business decisions
  • 04Integrity requires owning genuine harm

How to run it

  1. 1

    Pause the reaction

Notice the emotional impact without immediately defending yourself or changing the business.

Pro tip Save the message and revisit it after the first emotional spike passes.

Watch out A fast public response can turn a small issue into a larger conflict.

  2. 2

    Test for specificity

Ask whether the feedback identifies a concrete action, result, or omission rather than attacking identity or intelligence.

Pro tip Rewrite the message as a neutral factual claim.

Watch out Harsh tone does not automatically invalidate a specific concern.

  3. 3

    Find the improvement path

Determine whether the message offers or supports a correction, remedy, or better method.

Pro tip Ask what observable change would resolve the issue.

Watch out Advice can still be wrong even when it is actionable.

  4. 4

    Check impact and integrity

Investigate whether someone was harmed, misled, offended, or treated unfairly by the business.

Pro tip Seek evidence beyond the original comment when stakes are meaningful.

Watch out Do not use the filter to avoid accountability.

  5. 5

    Act or release

Own and correct valid critiques; let non-actionable attacks go when the deliberate business choice still stands.

Pro tip Document recurring valid critiques because they may reveal a systemic problem.

Watch out Repeated criticism from independent sources may contain a signal even without a proposed solution.

In the wild

Responding to a valid business critique

A customer identifies a confusing membership policy and explains where expectations diverged. Although the feedback stings, the owner verifies the confusion, clarifies the sales page, and acknowledges the customer's experience.

→ The critique improves communication and reduces future disputes.

Releasing a personal jab

Someone mocks an entrepreneur for marketing on social media but identifies no deception, harm, or operational problem. After checking that the marketing remains aligned with the business's values, the entrepreneur declines to change course.

→ Attention stays focused on customers and useful evidence rather than an unactionable attack.

Common mistakes

Equating discomfort with uselessness

The feedback that hurts most may still reveal the clearest route to improvement.

Demanding perfect delivery

A legitimate concern does not become false merely because it was communicated emotionally.

Calling every objection criticism

Using the label defensively prevents accountability and hides recurring business problems.

Is it for you?

Best for

This is best for leaders, creators, and business owners who receive frequent public feedback or online commentary.

Not ideal for

It is not ideal when used to dismiss repeated concerns merely because critics express them imperfectly or emotionally.
